Dear DaaS User,

Desktop hygiene isn't just about looking pretty.  There's a practical reason files should be stored in locations other than the desktop.  If the sprawl of files on your DaaS seems endless, we're going to review systematic organization.  But if you're already a Desktop "neat freak" with nicely organized rows of shortcuts, there's still some practical info for you here too.

Backed up or not?

Depending on your company's data configuration, files stored directly on your Desktop are likely not backed up.  This is the most critical issue, so let's discuss:

Shared vs. Private Storage

Many people think that if they store files and documents on their Desktop, those items are free from prying eyes.  Storing those items in the Documents folder, however, not only ensures they remain private, but are in a backed up location.

Your company also has a central repository of files.  Check with your network or office administrator if you don't know where it is.  Shared storage simply means it's in a place where others can access the same files.

Shortcuts vs. Real Files

Some users fall into the trap of making files "convenient" by copying them out of shared storage and onto the Desktop.  Those files are then not updated for the rest of the company and also not backed up.  So how do you balance ease-of-access with keeping files in their place?  Shortcuts.  There are a few ways to create and maintain these, so we create this easy guide: Shortcuts
