Occasionally applications crash or hang inside of Windows.  This fact of IT probably doesn't come as a surprise, but recovery inside of a Remote Desktop or Citrix-based session is different than what users might be used to for a local computer.

Recovery is slightly different depending on if the hosted desktop is Server 2008R2 (Windows 7 look and feel), Server 2012R2 (Windows 8.1 look and feel), Server 2016 (Windows 10 look and feel).

To end an unresponsive application in Windows Server 2008R2, follow these steps:

  1. Left-click on the Start (Windows) button and select the link for Windows Security.

  2. Select the option for Start Task Manager.

  3. Select the Applications tab.

  4. Find the application listed as Not Responding or that is having issues, left-click once to highlight it, and select the End Task button.
