This screenshots below are from an iPhone running iOS 10. The options and/or titles of some items may change over time, e.g. in iOS 10 we had "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" but in iOS 11 it is simply called "Accounts & Passwords." However the basic flow of adding an Exchange account remains the same.


This procedure assumes you're setting up an email account from a typical on-premises Exchange environment, using Hillco as the example. If you need assistance with setting up an Office 365 email account please see Office 365 - Mobile Device email setup.

Exchange ActiveSync settings are exactly the same on iPhones as they are on Android-based smartphones.

  1. Username: typically it's the first part of their email address, e.g. for administrator@hillcopartners.com it would be administrator. This isn't always the case however, so if that doesn't work then you can look up their username in Active Directory.
  2. PW: the user's Active Directory password. If it's Rackspace then it would be their Rackspace hosted Exchange password (Note: this password is independent from their AD account)
  3. Domain: the name of the Domain. In the below example it would hillcopartners. An easy way to find the domain of a Core client is to check the Domain Administrator entry in Keepass.
  4. Server: the proxy server for Exchange. e.g. mail.hillcopartners.com. Typically this is the same as the OWA address, e.g. mail.tstacy.com, or mail.waltersbay.com
  5. Description: this is up to the client. The default is "EXCHANGE," but they can change it to whatever they want, such as "Hillco Mail," or "Hillco Partners." Again, whatever they want.

Since there are a variety of Mail apps available on Android devices we don't have any walkthrough screenshots. That being said, the ActiveSync settings and setup process are identical to that of an iPhone, the only difference obviously is the OS and the actual application you choose to use. For example, the default Mail app allows you to add your email accounts within the app (as opposed to going to the phone's overall settings, as you would on an iPhone).
